Sandra Bass Palmer

Sandra Bass Palmer, 54, died April 23, 2010 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Faith Assembly, 5005 Corey Road in Winterville, North Carolina with interment to follow in Dunn, North Carolina. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Humble First Assembly of God, 1915 FM 1960 Bypass Road East in Humble, Texas 77338.

Mrs. Palmer was born in Dunn, North Carolina on October 02, 1955 to Vondrue and Alma Jean Bass.
She attended public school in Dunn and graduated from Dunn High School in 1973. In 1978, she graduated from Southeastern College in Lakeland, Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in Christian Ministry.
Mrs. Palmer served in Belgium for four and one-half years as a schoolteacher for the children of other missionaries. She then attended Spanish language school in Costa Rica for one year and received appointment as a World Missionary and became an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God. Sandra then served for one year in Colombia, South America in a missionary teaching position. Sandra added to her experience by writing and producing children’s programs in Spanish for S.T.A.R. Ministries in Florida, the Spanish Television And Radio network. The programs she produced were used throughout Latin America.
From 1993 to 2002, Sandra served as Women’s Ministries Director for the North Carolina District of the Assemblies of God. From 2003 until her death, she served in the same capacity for the South Texas District, headquartered in Houston.
Since July 2006, Sandra has been working toward building a long-term rehabilitation home for rescued victims of sex trafficking. Home of Hope-Texas had become the passion of her life and ministry.
She is survived by her husband, Mark, of Houston, Texas; parents, Clayton Vondrue and Alma Jean Bass of Greenville, North Carolina; sister, Vonda and husband, Les Robinson of Greenville, North Carolina; nieces, Caroline Lassiter and Kate Robinson; nephew, Clay Robinson, all of Greenville, North Carolina; an aunt, Jerri McLamb of Four Oaks, North Carolina; cousins, Rev. Sam McLamb and wife Teena of Mills River, North Carolina and Gary McLamb and wife Inge, of Burlington, North Carolina, and dear friends Dr. Glynn and Gay Lynn Dickens, of Salisbury, North Carolina.
In addition, Sandra had thousands of friends in many countries whose lives were affected by her vibrant personality, her love of people, and her faithful dedication to minister the Gospel of Jesus Christ in faraway corners of the globe. She leaves a huge vacancy in the hearts of many who dearly love her.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers that contributions in her honor be sent to Home of Hope-Texas, P.O. Box 60385, Houston, TX 77205.

Sandra Bass Palmer

Friday, April 23rd, 2010, Sandra was taken Home to be with the Lord. She was in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where she would be speaking on Saturday, traveling from the airport with the Pastor's wife when their car was hit by a truck. They both went home to be with the Lord at that time.

Sandra has been a truly vital part of our Women's Ministries, being our South Texas District Director but also because we were her Home-Girls. She loved the Women of Humble First Assembly, but she also had a special love for all women.

Home of Hope Texas, the home being built for victims of sex trafficking, in the Houston area was the vision the Lord gave her several years ago. Work is being done on the 20 acre piece of property north of Houston in preparation for the main building which will house women and girls who have been rescued.

There will be a Service at Humble First Assembly on Saturday, May 8th at 2PM to Celebrate her Life. For those wishing to give a memorial gift in honor of Sandra, they may do so by making it out and sending it to the South Texas District Office, P.O. Box 9714, Houston, TX, 77213, with a memo listing "Sandra Palmer Memorial". These funds will be directed through the Project Destiny account and to Home of Hope in Sandra's memory.

Please feel free to comment on this post to share your thoughts and memories of Sandra's powerful yet short life here on this earth. The Lord blessed us to be a part of her work and vision through our support of Project Destiny and Home of Hope.

Thanksgiving

THANKSGIVING

What does Thanksgiving mean to you?

Is it only a motion you go through?

When it arrives each and every year,

Do you think of it as a meal to share?

Some refer to it as simply Turkey day.

They don’t even take time to pray.

When some think of Thanksgiving Day,

They get excited because Christmas is on the way.

Hundreds search for the after-Thanksgiving Day sales.

Multitudes fret over all their Christmas details.

Years past, we would not consider putting up our Christmas decor,

Until this day was completely o’er.

The decorations were the pilgrim or Indian hats we wore,

Maybe a turkey displayed on our front door.

Still there are those who observe this as a sacred day.

There are those who do take the time to pray.

Many count their blessings instead of the people there.

They thank their God for all they have to share.

They thank Him for all the things He has done.

They count their blessing one by one.

When you come upon this Thanksgiving Day,

Do not simply give it away.

Take the time to reflect and pray.

Thank your God for this very special day.

Prayer Summit at Humble First Assembly

Please join the ladies from the North Houston Section

You will not want to miss

this exciting time of prayer and fellowship here at our church on

July 10th, 7 PM.

How Wide His Love...

As boldly as the center beam of the cross proclaims God's holiness, the crossbeam declares his love. And, oh, how wide his love reaches.

Aren't you glad the verse does not read:
"For God so loved the rich..."?
Or, "For God so loved the famous..."?
Or, "For God so loved the thin..."?

It doesn't. Nor does it state, "For God so loved the Europeans or Africans..." "the sober or successful..." "the young or the old..."

No, when we read John 3:16, we simply (and happily) read, "For God so loved the world."

How wide is God's love? Wide enough for the whole world. Are you included in the world?

Then you are included in God's love.

Bless Your Heart Greetings

Tuesday at 6:30PM in the Green Room of the Family Life Center, Kay Grissom and friends will be meeting to breathe life, love and words of prayer into paper and flowers and glue making greeting cards that will be sent all over the world with encouragement to those who are spreading the gospel abroad.

But now YOU can make a difference in another way. The Bless Your Heart Greeting Cards are now available for you with a suggested donation as well. And you can help in another way. Project Destiny will be the benefactor of the donations of the greeting cards. So when you need a birthday card for that beautiful sister or friend or even that man in your life, you can get a card from Women's Ministries and know that Project Destiny will be receiving the money from the donation. This is just another way of supporting Home of Hope and the other ministries that Project Destiny supports.

So next time you need a card, pick up a Bless Your Heart Greeting Card and make a donation to PROJECT DESTINY.

Friendship Dinner Recipes

We've had some requests for the recipes from the Friendship Dinner. So we thought we would just add them here for for you to enjoy. Thanks to John Nevitt for letting us use his recipe.

John Nevitt’s Chicken Salad

Cook 1 whole chicken (4 lbs.) in carrots, celery, onion, garlic, & 1 bay leaf. Cool, debone and cut into small chunks. Mix sauce into meat.
Sauce:
3 stalks celery (chopped finely)
1 small apple ½ small white onion
¼ c. raisins or grapes
1 ¼ c, mayonnaise
1 tsp. sugar
2 Tbls. Dijon mustard
Salt, pepper, & Tony Chacheres Creole seasoning to taste. Serves 6-8

Wacky Mac Pasta Salad

8 oz.( or 2/3 of 12 oz. pkg.) of wacky mac or rainbow rotini cooked and drained then rinsed in cold water.
½ c. chopped celery
4 oz. can chopped blackn olives
½ c. chopped onion
fresh chopped garlic
½ chopped bell pepper
2 Tbls. accent
4 oz. jar pimentos
2 Tbls. Seasoned salt
1/3 c. olive oil
3 Tbls. Fresh lemon juice
Mix all together and marinade overnight.
For the Friendship Dinner, I used garlic powder instead of fresh garlic and Italian salad dressing in the place of the lemon juice and olive oil. Serves 8 or more

Home of Hope

Sandra Palmer added this interview to the Home of Hope website. Please go and take a look at it.

"Please go to www.homeofhopetexas.com and click on the "in the news" tab and watch the new report from our local news last night.
Be sure you watch until the end and listen to the last few sentences."

Have your cake and eat it too!

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug (MicroSafe)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well..
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT ! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time
of the day or night!

Multi-colored Love

By Charlotte Holt
Everyone loved my mother. At times, I’ll have to admit; I wondered why. I watched as she tended to the needs of those around her. She had a kind word of encouragement to whomever she encountered, especially if they suffered. She liked to advise those in any trouble. As a teenager, I didn’t think much of her advice, but I learned of her wisdom as I grew older.

Her life wasn’t easy. She made plenty of sacrifices for her family. She rose early every morning and put a full breakfast on the table before rushing off to work all day in the school cafeteria. Her biscuits and gravy made me smile. The piping hot yeast rolls she cooked at school brought joy to all. My mother cooked at home and at her job. I’ve heard people say, “My mother was the best cook ever.” Well, I guarantee you; mine outranked them all.

Not only did she put delicious food on the table, but she ministered to every student she served when they came through the line. She knew each one by name, what they liked to eat, and something about them. When she found out their favorite food, she piled extra amounts on their trays. Each felt special because of my mother’s love.

My mother got up early to tend to our needs, and she stayed up late. One summer, in my teen years, I learned further about her love for me. I grew up wearing homemade feed sack dresses and hand-me-downs. Our meager budget didn’t allow store bought things often. The night before I left for church camp, mother worked until after midnight sewing me a dress with purchased material. The new garment consisted of every color of the rainbow. I proudly wore it all week.

Now, I understood fully why everyone loved my mother. She gave endlessly of herself to bring happiness to others. She made all feel loved, including me. Her hard work and kindness compares to the Proverbs 31 Woman. She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed … Proverbs 31:27-28 (NKJV)
I still smile when I think of the love my Mama sewed into my dress. I relate to Joseph when Jacob stitched him his special coat of many colors. (Genesis 37:3)

Are you too busy?

I'm busy Lord.
Surely you can see the thousand
Things that wait for me.
The dishes still lie in the sink,
I cannot stop to pray or think.
Lord, I know you understand.
You gave those children to my hand.
And know they cry and need me so,
Lord you understand I better go.
Now I’ve got them all to sleep,
I better dust and mop and sweep
I must thaw out the meat for stew
and the ironing is long overdue.
And kindly my Lord answered me.
“Why do you from my presence flee?
I have so much for you today
My child I want to hear you pray.
I love you child, I want you here,
To rest and listen and shed a tear.
For what if Paul had stopped so say,
‘Lord I’m too busy to write letters today.’
Know my child, I’m what you need
Through household duties you can speed.
Yet when you’re through there’s emptiness
If this quiet time you miss.”
Oh thank you Lord for showing me
how much I need to wait on thee.
For what’s an undone dish or two
compared to sharing time with you?

Easter Celebration

By Charlotte Holt

Easter comes and goes each year. Women, young and old alike, slip into new dresses, bonnets, and tight fitting shoes. Suits, sports coats, dress slacks, new pastel shirts, and shiny, sleek dress shoes for the men of the family briefly brighten their closets and then adorn their bodies. Families parade to church looking like a million bucks. Almost everyone I know wants something new for Easter. Even those with limited resources break forth with something freshly acquired.

Baskets, bunnies and decorations signifying this spring celebration line the store shelves and are placed in homes far and wide. Almost every place in the world have those who celebrate this holiday in some form or fashion. Easter egg hunts are scheduled at churches, schools, and community centers. Youngsters hope to find the ‘Lucky’ egg, or the most. Prizes are awarded to those who do.

The smell of vinegar permeates homes as multiple colors are mixed for children to dye eggs of various colors. Plastic eggs are filled with candy. Chocolate Easter bunnies lose their ears to eager children wanting to taste their splendor. Mouths water and brown seems to be the color found on chairs, pillows, and even the floor.

Bunnies have a difficult time laying all the eggs, so chickens are enlisted to help in the feat. Baby chicks are cute, so they are painted different colors. Candy models are even fashioned for children to eat. Youngsters carry their baskets, filled with delicious marshmallow chicks, chocolate bunnies, jellybeans, and candy eggs, along with other toys, of course.

Mother slaves in the kitchen to prepare a meal fit for a king. Then it’s time to sit down at the table to enjoy a feast of ham, smooth creamy mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, creamed peas, candied carrots, or just about anything you can think of to eat. Each person fills his plate – some to the brim. Sideboards might come in handy. The children squirm and take a bite or two. They want to know if they can leave, for they are through. Seems the candy satisfied their appetite. They inquire about when they can hunt eggs again before the grown ups finish.

Dessert sets on the cabinet waiting to be cut and served. Stuffed tummies need to wait until later in the day. When mentioned, participants groan and rub their full pouch. Some talk of going for a walk, but a nap wins out. Children want to play and adults want to sleep. No time for prayer and talking about the reason for the day.

Leftovers stored in the refrigerator, a few eaten later, but most thrown away. Everyone resumes a diet the next day. The boiled eggs stay to make tuna for the week or lessen the calories we eat. The candy gets eaten by the kids, or thrown away. “Maybe just a little bite,” we hear some say.

The children carry their baskets around for a few days. They hide eggs for a while as they play. Then, they set them aside for another year. Mother gathers up the mess and puts away Easter for another time.
“Where did Easter go?” A woman sighs. “What’s it all about?”
Then, she remembers a story from long ago. About the love a man had for her soul. He loved her so much he even died. Thinking of how her family failed to celebrate His death and resurrection – she sat down and cried.

Often, we forget the real reason for the Easter celebration. We don’t take time to remember what Christ did. We become so encumbered with other things we ignore the most important thing of all.

After Easter day ends, the new duds gather dust in the closet. Too often we put Christ and His resurrection back on the proverbial shelf and don’t take Him down until the next holiday, or maybe even the next Easter.

Let’s not be guilty of either of these this year. Let’s celebrate the resurrection and continue in the power of it everyday of our lives.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Things mentioned in the story are wholesome ways to celebrate Easter. They add fun and bring happy memories. However, some ways to keep Christ and His resurrection as the central focus could be achieved by some of the following suggestions:
  • Pray before the delicious meal and thank Him
  • Parents tell your children the real reason for Easter
  • Read from your Bible a gospel account of Christ death and resurrection during the season
  • Display Christian symbols of the resurrection (a cross, a lamb)
  • Set up a yard display of the empty cross with the words – He is risen!
  • Invest in Resurrection Eggs and explore their meaning (You can get these at Christian bookstores or online)
  • Sing resurrection songs together
  • Read books with the Easter story regarding the resurrection
  • Call it Resurrection Day in exchange for Easter
  • Have the children write poems or their own stories about the resurrection
  • Send Easter cards with the resurrection message

Have you seen it?

Has anyone noticed what's new in our neighborhoods?  Every time you turn a corner there's a new explosion of bright pinks and corals and fuchsias and clarets and rose in the form of the azaleas that are blooming everywhere.  And my favorite time of year is when the brilliant lime green leaves just pop out of the tips of the trees with seemingly overnight expression.  And within just a few days the whole pallette has changed as we venture out into the new fashion of springtime.  Just  notice for yourselves the beauty.

Isaiah 61:10
I will sing for joy in God, explode in praise from deep in my soul! He dressed me up in a suit of salvation, he outfitted me in a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom who puts on a tuxedo and a bride a jeweled tiara. For as the earth bursts with spring wildflowers, and as a garden cascades with blossoms, So the Master, God, brings righteousness into full bloom and puts praise on display before the nations.
